Leaving the pier
The car turns away from the sea at the edge of Ban Phe, passes fish-sauce factories and fruit stalls and reaches Rayong in about 20 minutes. The coast road is two lanes with a few lights. A Sunday morning here is quiet.

The long straight to the city
From Rayong the motorway runs north across flat country past Chon Buri, with truck lanes and industrial estates on both sides. The speed is steady unless there is a crash. The distance of 210 km is mostly this stretch.

Into Bangkok
Traffic builds from about 40 km out. Sunday afternoon and evening are the heaviest, when weekend visitors drive back, and the same is true on the last day of a long weekend. A departure from Ban Phe before 12:00 gets into the city before the peak.
Hotels in the east of Bangkok are reached first. A central address adds time.
